The Limelight in Belfast says it won't open until next year despite restrictions easing

A popular Belfast city centre venue has said that it will not open again until next year despite restrictions easing on Friday.

The Limelight, on Ormeau Avenue, has issued a statement saying that it has taken the decision not to reopen this weekend and has cancelled its upcoming Shane Todd Christmas Roast shows.

Even though hospitality premises are allowed to open this weekend after more than seven weeks of closure, it has said that due to the restrictions that remain on the industry, it will remain closed.

The Limelight has said it will refund all those who have bought tickets to the Christmas Roast shows.

It has said that Christmas and New Year is usually one of its busiest times, but sadly that won't be the case next year and it hopes that live music, club nights and entertainment can return once again in 2021.

A Limelight spokesperson said: "Due to the ongoing restrictions placed on licensed premises, we have taken the decision not to open the Limelight this weekend. But as soon as restrictions ease a little whereby we can offer you some closer approximation of a proper Limelight night out rest assured we will be back once again.

"Unfortunately this means that the scheduled Shane Todd Christmas Roast shows are now cancelled, refunds will be automatically processed (please allow for a few days for funds to return to your account).

"Christmas and New Year's is usually one of the busiest periods at The Limelight, with thousands of party and gig goers using this festive period to celebrate with colleagues, catch up with friends & family or enjoy one final gig of the year.

"Unfortunately that won’t be an option this year but we look forward to the return of live music, club nights and entertainment in general in 2021. Thanks and have an enjoyable break this month, you all deserve it."
