Wales Rugby World Cup training squad announcement: The 48 men you can expect to see named on Tuesday

Wales coach Warren Gatland will name a widened training squad next Tuesday as the build-up the Rugby World Cup in Japan begins in earnest.

In 2015, Wales named a 47-man training squad before whittling it down to the final 31.

We're predicting a group of 48 this time around, with the huge back-row competition likely to mean Gatland wants an extra look at one or two others.

You can see all the key dates for the World Cup warm-up matches, training camps and final squad announcement, here.

BACK-THREE (Five likely to make final squad):

Leigh Halfpenny, Liam Williams, George North, Josh Adams, Hallam Amos, Jonah Holmes, Steff Evans, Owen Lane.

Let's start at the back.

Leigh Halfpenny, Liam Williams, George North and Josh Adams are all on the plane to Japan, baring injury or a dramatic loss of form.

Hallam Amos, Jonah Holmes and Steff Evans have all been involved in Wales camps before but still have a fair bit to prove when it comes to booking their place in the final squad.

However, the bolter in the pack is Cardiff Blues wing Lane. He's been on the cusp of Wales squads before - only for injury to deny him.

After an incredible run of form since the New Year, he'll be there as long as the injury he suffered on Judgement Day isn't too bad, and the 21-year-old certainly won't be just making up the numbers.

CENTRES (Three likely to make final squad):

Hadleigh Parkes, Jonathan Davies, Scott Williams, Owen Watkin, Jamie Roberts.

Into midfield and another four who are relatively secure.

Hadleigh Parkes and Jonathan Davies are first-choice, while Scott Williams has more than enough credit in the bank if he can shake off the injuries that have plagued him this season.

Owen Watkin arguably has yet to properly announce his arrival but he has been an ever-present in Wales squads in recent times.

94-cap centre Jamie Roberts hasn't given up on his dreams of pulling on the Wales jersey again, having last played for Wales in November 2017, and could be brought back into the wider squad if Gatland opts to name more than four centres in the training squad.

It may seem hard to fathom Roberts being brought out of international wilderness, but which alternatives offer Gatland proven Test level quality?

Tyler Morgan is admittedly a favourite of Gatland when it comes to surprise selections, while Cory Allen has also featured on the international stage. We shall see.

FLY-HALVES (Three likely to make final squad):

Gareth Anscombe, Dan Biggar, Rhys Patchell, Jarrod Evans.

If Wales are likely to pick four fly-halves in their training squad next week, then look no further than these four.

Gareth Anscombe and Dan Biggar are nailed-on, Rhys Patchell has shown he can play Test rugby despite a difficult season and Jarrod Evans' rapid rise as Cardiff Blues playmaker saw him involved with Wales' squad in the autumn and Six Nations.

With Rhys Priestland captured by the 60-cap rule after signing a new deal at Bath and Sam Davies still some way off international contention, these are the four names you can expect to see next Tuesday.

SCRUM-HALVES (Three likely to make final squad):

Gareth Davies, Tomos Williams, Aled Davies, Rhodri Williams.

Again, going on the basis Wales pick four scrum-halves, these are your likely men.

Tomos Williams and Gareth and Aled Davies have been mainstays in the Welsh squad since Rhys Webb left for France and all three of them will be named.

The fact that trio have had a monopoly on the three scrum-half places in the squad means that someone is likely to be brought in from the cold if they opt for four.

Rhodri Williams dives across the Ospreys' try line (Chris Fairweather/Huw Evans Agency)

That could be Cardiff Blues scrum-half Lloyd Williams or it could be another Williams - namely the Dragons' Rhodri.

You'd argue it's likely to be the latter.

Naturally, Webb won't be named while he's still plying his trade in France, but that doesn't mean he couldn't return home after next Tuesday and still make the final 31-man squad.

PROPS (Five likely to make final squad):

Rob Evans, Nicky Smith, Wyn Jones, Tomas Francis, Samson Lee, Dillon Lewis, Leon Brown.

Wales could well take five props to Japan to free up space elsewhere in the squad for other selections.

Therefore, it's a solid bet to imagine they'd name seven props in the wider training squad.

Rob Evans, Nicky Smith, Tomas Francis, Samson Lee and Dillon Lewis are in pole position at the moment.

It's up to Wyn Jones and Leon Brown to force their way in.

The four big Welsh rugby transfer rumours right now and what's likely to happen

HOOKERS (Three likely to make final squad):

Ken Owens, Elliot Dee, Ryan Elias, Kristian Dacey.

Last time around, Gatland named four hookers in his training squad - cutting it down to two in the final reckoning.

He'll likely opt for three this time around as Japan is a little further away for an injury replacement to travel than England was four years ago.

As for the four he'll pick this time, Ken Owens, Elliot Dee and Ryan Elias were all involved in the Grand Slam squad this year.

The next cab off the rank is likely Cardiff Blues hooker Kristian Dacey - who was part of the training squad four years ago.

SECOND-ROWS (Four likely to make final squad):

Alun Wyn Jones, Adam Beard, Cory Hill, Jake Ball, Seb Davies, Bradley Davies.

Alun Wyn Jones is a certainty, simple as that. Adam Beard and Cory Hill too.

The problem with Alun Wyn Jones' future, the WRU's reluctance to step in and the risk of 'disaster'

If Jake Ball can stay fit, he's another one who is likely to go to Japan.

Cardiff Blues lock Seb Davies will be in there too for his ability to play back-row, while Bradley Davies' recent form for the Ospreys warrants a chance to prove himelf.

BACK-ROWS (Five likely to make final squad):

Josh Navidi, Ross Moriarty, Justin Tipuric, Taulupe Faletau, Aaron Wainwright, Aaron Shingler, Thomas Young, James Davies, Dan Lydiate, Josh Turnbull.

The hardest area to predict.

First of all, I don't see the injured Ellis Jenkins being named in this wider squad. I'd imagine Wales will monitor his progress and make a decision whether to bring him in at a later date.

Many of the back-row options are certainties for the training squad, but there are a few tight calls.

Aaron Shingler has been injured all season, but I'd back him to be involved. James Davies has also had an injury-hit campaign, but he deserves a shot at building on his staring performances in Argentina last summer.

And the reason I went for 48 rather than 47 is because I believe Gatland would want to look at as many credible options as possible.

And that could mean both Dan Lydiate and Josh Turnbull being selected.

Turnbull offers second-row cover which Gatland might consider useful in the make-up of a 31-man squad, while I still maintain that Lydiate will be on the plane to Japan, as long as he's fit.
