The Stanley Cup has been through a lot over the years. From being tossed off a deck into a pool — supposedly — to being a dog’s food bowl, the Stanley Cup has seen a lot of wear and tear.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have now contributed to that longstanding tradition, as on Monday during their boat parade celebrating back-to-back championships, they somehow put quite a sizable dent in the Stanley Cup! Pictures circulated late in the afternoon of a Tampa Bay player holding the Stanley Cup with its bowl caved in on one side, then NHL reporters confirmed the story that the trophy had suffered some damage.
Here’s how the Stanley Cup looked at the end of Tampa Bay’s victory celebrations.

That’s a dent alright! Luckily, the Stanley Cup that was damaged is the traveling Stanley Cup that’s used for celebrations such as this. The original Stanley Cup sits at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, safe and sound.
Thankfully, the Lightning will be able to repair the damaged sustained to the Stanley Cup after shipping it to Montreal for a fix up. The irony of the Stanley Cup going to Montreal just for repairs should not be lost on any of us, too.
