Ragtime was the first genre of music to dominate the American popular scene (from the late 1890s until the late 1910s). Scott Joplin was named the king of ragtime writers. The Life and Music of Scott Joplin traces Joplin’s life: from an itinerate pianist, to a renowned composer, to an opera composer. His first composition, Maple Leaf Rag, became ragtime’s first and most influential hit. He was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1976.

For this production, Melbourne’s ragtime pianist Stephen Grant and music director Craig Mitten lead a group of nine musicians. It is narrated by Greg Poppleton who plays the character of Joplin’s music publisher and supporter, John Stark.
