The Lib Dems are demanding action to boost struggling high streets like Clifton Village

The Liberal Democrats want to abolish business rates so that "struggling high streets such as Clifton Village can thrive".

Retailers have had a tough start to 2019, with many well-known brands being forced to close down stores in a bid to stay afloat.

And Bristol has not been immune to the retail downturn either.

What the future holds for Bristol as the UK high street crumbles

Big name chains across the city continue to close as they battle with rising rents and stiff online competition.

The issues have prompted the Liberal Democrats to launch a plan to “end the crisis on Britain's high streets” by abolishing business rates.

The party has said it wants to support struggling high streets across England, including Clifton Village.

The plan calls for bold action to ensure town centres and high streets thrive in an increasingly digital economy, such as boosting support for local entrepreneurs, reforming local planning laws, developing local asset registers and creating a new industry-led body to help brick-and-mortar retailers adapt to the digital economy.

How every high street in Bristol could become like Gloucester Road

It also lays out policies to make it as easy as possible for entrepreneurs to set up on the high street, by offering low-cost incubation space and business support for start-ups as well as making temporary pop-up units available for start-ups to trial new products and services without being tied to long rents.

The Lib Dems have said the plans are “exactly the sort of policy we need to boost local investment and ensure businesses in Clifton thrive”.

The stores which shut down in 2018

Lib Dem Clifton campaigner Max Langer said: "Clifton Village and Gloucester Road are unfortunately rare success stories as twenty-first century high streets.

“But, ongoing pressures from sky-high business rates and rents are threatening their existence. Not to mention looming Brexit chaos.

"The Lib Dem plan will revive our high streets, spreading jobs and opportunity across our city.”
