The Leicester City injury crisis that could have an impact on Arsenal's January transfer plans

Leicester and Arsenal could be set to battle it out for the same player this month.

The January transfer window is now open and Arsenal have been linked with a number of defensive players, given their poor defensive record so far this season.

The Gunners signed Kieran Tierney and David Luiz in the summer, although Tierney has not yet been able to show what he can do following a string of injury problems.

William Saliba also signed, but he went back on loan to Saint Etienne and will not arrive properly until this summer.

Mikel Arteta has already had some impact in the short space of time he has been head coach, with Arsenal keeping only their fourth clean sheet of the Premier League season in the win over Manchester United on New Year's Day.

But that will not stop the Spaniard looking in the transfer market or the club being linked with defensive targets.

One man they have been tipped to sign is out-of-favour Juventus star Merih Demiral.

The Turkish international has found first team opportunities hard to come by under Maurizio Sarri, playing just five times for the Old Lady this season.

As such he has been linked with a move away with Arsenal the most heavily linked.

However, Leicester have emerged as contenders in recent days and according to the Daily Mail have even had an opening £25million bid rejected by the Italian giants.

And Arsenal could face a fight to sign Demiral as Leicester could up the ante in the coming days.

The Foxes saw Wes Morgan and Filip Benkovic both go off injured during their 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, leaving them light of cover at the back.

If Brendan Rodgers was interested in Demiral before, he is sure to be more keen to bolster his defensive options as a result of those injuries now.
