Catherine the Great, who ruled Russia from 1762 to 1796, saw herself as the reine-philosophe (the philosopher queen) and a new kind of ruler in the Age of Enlightenment. Guided by Europe’s intellectuals, she sought to modernise Russia’s economy, industry and government, and was known for her patronage of the arts. In 1794, the Hermitage Museum was founded in St Petersburg.
Over 500 works from Catherine the Great’s personal collection, gathered over a 34-year period, will be presented in Australia. The exhibition represents the foundation of the Hermitage’s collection and includes works by Rembrandt, Rubens and Titan.
