The Leeds United XI worth £550million in today's money

It's been almost 19 years since Leeds United broke their transfer record, as life outside the Premier League has capped the club's spending.

Rio Ferdinand's £18million arrival from West Ham in November 2000 came amid a period of free-spending at Elland Road as Peter Ridsdale lived the dream.

The club's well documented fall from grace and subsequent financial problems saw spending reigned in and for a generation of Leeds fans, it's easy to forget just how much money the club spent back in their top flight days.

A study from Totally Money has this week adjusted the 100 most expensive transfers each season from Europe's top five leagues since 1992 into modern day money - and the results are eye watering.

That means Ferdinand's 2002 sale to Manchester United clocks in at a whopping £158million, while the likes of Brian Deane and Lee Sharpe's adjusted fees also go to show the scale Leeds were dealing with in the transfer market.

Armed with the data, we thought we'd put together the most expensive Leeds United XI based on the club's transfer dealings - both in and out - from 1992 onwards.

Ferdinand obviously tops the list, but there are some surprise names in a team that would cost more than half-a-billion pounds to assemble today.
