The Leeds United future Richard Keogh nearly had instead of joining Derby County

Derby County captain Richard Keogh is hardly the most popular person in LS11.

After all, he was in the thick of  Deby County's dramatic play-off win over Leeds United in May, and, much to the annoyance of the Elland Road faithful, he was in the thick of the on-pitch celebrations.

Put simply, it is hard to imagine the Ireland stopper playing for the Whites in the future.

Strangely though, Keogh almost did join United once upon a time, in a very different era and under a very different manager.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Keogh revealed that he almost joined the Whites during Neil Warnock's reign.

He said: "Leeds were potentially about to be taken over, and Neil (Warnock) told me he needed a bit more time.

"I told Leeds that if they had a bid accepted (by Coventry) then I’d talk to them.

"But I always felt Derby was the right fit for me and the right step in my career. We’ve been a good fit so far."

Keogh was at the forefront of May's thrilling play-off encounter, setting up the eventual winner for the Rams.

He will arrive at Elland Road on Saturday very much an opposition player.
