The Leeds suburb where Covid cases have jumped 250 per cent in a week

An affluent north Leeds suburb has seen a sudden rise in its coronavirus infection rate, despite the city's overall figures continuing to fall.

The city remains gripped in Tier 3 after the government's decision earlier this week, which means pubs, bars and restaurants will stay closed over the festive period.

Although it has frustrated many people, the combination of the November shutdown and the subsequent move into Tier 3 has seen Leeds' infection rate drop to less than 150. When the UK was initially shutdown at the start of November, it was 431.8.

Despite the picture looking far more favourable across the city as a whole, there is one Leeds suburb which has suddenly reported a huge rise in cases.

The number of cases in Roundhay Park and Slaid Hill have jumped 237.5 per cent in the space of a week.

In the seven days to December 6, just eight people tested positive for coronavirus in the area. Fast forward a week though, and a further 27 people fell ill with Covid-19 in the seven days to December 13.

It means the neighbourhood currently has the worst infection rate in the entire city (469.4).

For comparison, the city's overall infection rate is just 140.5.

It appears as though the outbreak is localised, with a number of neighbouring wards among the least infected places in Leeds.

The infection rate in Collingham, Rigton and Harewood is just 93.3.

Another neighbouring ward - Scarcroft, Shadwell and Scholes - has recorded so few cases in the latest official data that it is not even included on Public Health England's map.

Seven–day rates are expressed per 100,000 population and are calculated by dividing the seven day count by the area population and multiplying by 100,000.
