Who’s going to be crowned the UK’s 57th PM?

Opposition parties are, of course, calling for a general election well before 2024.

House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt has been the first to declare, while former chancellor Rishi Sunak and the hugely divisive ex-PM Boris Johnson are also said to be in the running.

But, after her dramatic resignation on Thursday after a brief stint in No.10, Liz Truss has to eke out up to a week before her successor is anointed.

There’s also unhappiness that she may receive a £115,000-a-year ex-prime minister’s payout for future public duties - but Truss would have to apply for this, and we don’t know if she will.

It will be a weekend of wheeler-dealing before nominations go in on Monday.

But whoever it is, how legitimate will their government be and who can offer stability Britain’s craving?

To examine the days ahead, the chances of a general election and the damage done to Britain’s international reputation, the Leader’s joined by Evening Standard deputy political editor David Bond and Dr Parth Patel, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research.
