The Leader podcast: Speaking to Ukraine on Independence Day

Today marks both six months since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine began, but is also the anniversary of the Independence Day of Ukraine.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has made a surprise trip to the country to visit President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, a day after pledging continued support for the country.

Ukrainian defence chiefs say around 9,000 of their troops have been killed since the invasion began on the 24th of February.

Today, the UK’s Armed forces minister James Heappey revealed that Vladimir Putin’s army has lost 80,000 soldiers “killed, wounded, captured, gone missing or deserted” in that same six-month timeline.

British defence chiefs have stressed that the war in Ukraine is proving “costly and strategically harmful” to Russia.

We speak with Denys Ganzha, a Ukrainian Youth Delegate to the UN in Kyiv, about the situation in the country, why there is optimism they can be victorious, and what further support Ukraine needs.
