Thousands of railways workers walk out on to the picket lines, leaving only a fifth of services running and half of lines closed.
It’s the sixth bout of rail industrial action this year as members of the RMT, TSSA and Unite unions who work for Network Rail and 14 rail operators take to the picket lines in a dispute over pay and working conditions.
The fallout has also left reduced services on some Tube lines.
But, it’s not over - there’s a Tube strike on Friday, and now RMT general secretary Mick Lynch says they’re “dug in” for a war of attrition that’s feared to drag on into the new premiership of Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak.
There’s another rail strike scheduled for Saturday and real concern over a winter of industrial action, coupled with worries about surging energy prices and inflation now topping 10 per cent.
