The Leader podcast: Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s biggest street party!

After a three-year hiatus, Notting Hill Carnival returns to the streets of London this year.

Europe’s biggest street party is expected to attract around 2 million people to the city, and organisers have said this year will be ‘bigger and better’ than ever.

The festival is going ahead despite some bus strikes and tube station closures over the bank holiday weekend.

This year’s carnival will feature the first-ever electric float, as it moves in a more green direction, and the party will feature 38 booming sound systems, as well as 84 vibrant Mas bands.

We speak with Carnival veteran Clary Salandy who has been designing costumes for the festival since the 1980s, about the significance of the event, what it’s like to have it back for the first time since 2019, and what it brings to London.

Plus we hear from Tamsin Salfrais from Mas Band Colours Carnival about what is new this year.

And the Evening Standard’s Culture Commissioning Editor Jochan Embley discusses the impact Notting Hill Carnival has on the capital.
