The Leader podcast: London Underground spring strikes threat

Hold on to your Oyster cards because London’s biggest Tube drivers’ union is warning of a series of long-lasting and “hard-hitting” strikes this spring.

The Standard’s transport editor Ross Lydall has revealed Aslef’s dramatic escalation in a row over pensions, working conditions and driver-only trains set to leave ordinary Londoners suffering as they try to get from A to Z.

Aslef is giving notice to Transport for London it’s balloting 2,000 members over changes, with the outcome due in mid-February.

It comes as London Underground on Tuesday celebrates its 160th anniversary, with a party at Baker Street attended by Mayor Sadiq Khan, who needs to shave £100 million from Transport for London’s pension scheme as part of the government’s Covid bailout.

The Leader podcast’s joined by Ross to discuss the latest on the new strike concerns, 2023 passenger fares and the unveiling of a special edition Tube roundel logo.
