The law on cannabis oil is heartless - no-one should have to break the law to ease suffering

Something is deeply wrong when police officers are forced to break the law.

Former cop Lisa Quarrell served the public as an upstanding member of the community.

But she also desperately wanted to obtain medical cannabis oil to help her severely epileptic son.

So she had to smuggle the product into Britain from the Netherlands.

Lisa has spent thousands of pounds on these missions, dreading them because she knows what she’s doing is illegal.

But her little boy has terrible seizures and cannabis oil helps where nothing else has.

The UK has attempted to fight a war on drugs, despite all the evidence that it isn’t working.

The country is governed by Tory ministers who have admitted taking drugs, while insisting everyone else should be harshly punished.

The rules on medicinal cannabis oil were relaxed but Lisa still had to travel abroad. GPs here are not generally willing to prescribe the product.

A former police officer should not be in the position where the only option left is to break the law.

It is heartbreaking that six-year-old Cole has to rely on his mum risking a criminal record to ease his suffering.

Back off devo

The Tory leadership contest has already seen a spate of English MPs do their best to undermine devolution and alienate Scotland.

Now the Scottish Tory MPs are getting in on the act.

All 13 have signed up to a call for the next prime minister to flout the rules of devolution by spending in devolved areas without consultation with the Scottish Government.

If the UK Government wants to give Scotland more money to spend on devolved services, that would obviously be very welcome.

They can do it by increasing Scotland’s block grant and letting the democratically elected Scottish Parliament decide how to spend it.

This blatant attempt to rip up the Scotland Act in a doomed effort to shore up support for the Union is risible.

Scots won’t be fooled by it and Scottish Tory MPs should know better than to suggest it.

Weigh to go..

Congratulations to super slimmer Adrian Wren, who has lost an amazing 11st 7lbs.

The 42-year-old was 28st when he took inspiration from his mum’s dieting efforts to turn his life around.

It goes to show that mum really does know best...
