The latest viral hack to make delicious iced coffee from your kitchen

Coffee lovers across Edinburgh may have been finding it a bit difficult this week, with the majority of cafes and coffeeshops closed due to lockdown. As most people will be staying at home as much as possible, the next time they can order a beautifully barista crafted coffee may be a while away.

Nevertheless, some are trying to recreate the feeling in their own homes with the latest TikTok trend , a recipe for a very fancy looking Dalgona iced coffee with minimal ingredients and effort. The hashtag 'coffeewhip' on TikTok now has over 1.4million views, with users worldwide trying to recreate the perfect lockdown beverage.

Dalgona coffee is a creamy coffee made mainly with four ingredients and originated from South Korea. To put the online hack to the test, we tried out the recipe to see if it lived up to its reputation and can confirm it's as close to the real thing as you're going to get.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons instant coffee
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons hot water
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Ice cubes

Method

  • Combine the instant coffee, sugar, hot water and vanilla extract in a small bowl, whip the mixture using a whisk or milk frother and stop when it becomes thicker and lighter in colour. (We recommend you use an electric whisk, it takes a while)
  • Put some ice cubes and milk into a cup then top with the coffee mixture and mix them together
  • Add any additional sugar or milk to adapt to your taste

And there you have it, a fresh and tasty iced coffee that will give you the caffeine fix you need on lockdown. If you have any other home hacks, or if you want to show how you did with this one, get in touch and let us know. You can contact us on twitter and Facebook.
