The latest travel advice for airline passengers looking for a refund

Social media sites continue to be awash with angry travellers struggling to get their money back on holidays.

The ongoing situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic has severely hit the airline industry with no clear idea of when schedules will be able to return back to normal.

Frustrations have reached a fever pitch as a result of the sheer volume of customers who are all in the same boat.

While phone lines and live chats have been flooded, most travel providers and airline companies have been incapable of coping with the demand.

If you find yourself among the many thousands in this position, the following advice, provided by Which? travel advisor Rory Boland on Twitter, may be of use.

  • Ask for a refund in an email

While it's optimistic to expect a response, you will at least have something in writing and on record down the line.

If you are in dire financial circumstances, contact the travel company to inform of this. Some refunds have been issued on this basis.

  • The ABTA does not make laws

Ignore communications about regulations from ABTA. and be assured that you are still entitled to a cash refund for package holidays within 14 days.

  • You do not need to accept a credit note or voucher .

Furthermore, the advice is to avoid the offer altogether in the event vouchers wouldn't be protected should the operator or airline go bust.

  • Money back is only refundable by the holiday provider

Ignore advice from package holiday companies that recommend contacting your travel insurer.

  • Try to claim the money back through your bank .

Ask for a 'Section 75' purchases made by credit card or a 'chargeback' on purchases made by debit card.

Consumer advice site Which? continue to work closely with travel customers. They are currently urging the government to step in in order to force travel companies to foot the bill and refund passengers.

If you wish to share you can do so on Twitter by using the hashtag #RefundPassengers
