The latest on the Leeds city centre skyscraper set to become Yorkshire's tallest building

In amongst the mish-mash of cranes on the Leeds skyline is a development that will soon become the tallest building in Yorkshire.

Altus House, a 38-storey skyscraper that will tower over everything else in Leeds city centre, is progressing at an impressive rate.

Once completed, it will rise 114 metres above ground level and surpass Bridgewater Place as the tallest building in Leeds by just two metres.

It wasn't too long ago that a tired office building from the 1960's stood on the site, at the junction of Lovell Park Road and Merrion Way, but Hume House was demolished earlier this year to make way for the exciting development.

Over the course of the summer, the massive concrete core of the building has shot up and it will be finished by the end of September.

This huge structure will be in the middle of the skyscraper and house the main staircase and lift shaft. There will also be a small number of studio flats inside the concrete structure that is nearing completion.

Once this stage is finished, construction workers will turn their attentions to building floor plates on the ground level.

It won't come as a surprise to many that the huge tower block will become student accommodation. Undergraduates moving to Leeds for the academic year in 2021 will be among the first to move into the building, which is going up in area an area fast becoming the epicentre of student living.

There will be a total of 752 bedrooms and studio flats alongside common areas.

Arena Point, another student tower block, stands directly next door and another huge building is being erected on the site of the former Stick and Twist Wetherspoons pub around 40 metres down the road. This too will become student accommodation.
