The latest on Sunderland’s transfer pursuit of West Ham’s Pierre Ekwah as deal edges closer

West Ham United midfielder Pierre Ekwah is set to join Sunderland in a permanent transfer.

The 21-year-old, who joined West Ham for an undisclosed fee in June 2021 from Chelsea, has scored five goals in 11 appearances for the Hammers’ under-21s in Premier League 2 this season, with his latest coming in Friday night’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United.

Earlier in the window, Sunderland had expressed an interest in signing Ekwah on loan and on Monday, both clubs were in discussions over a potential permanent transfer.

Now, football.london understands an agreement has been reached between the two clubs and that Ekwah is set to put pen to paper over a permanent switch to Wearside, with Sky Sports reporting that he will sign a four-and-a-half-year contract.

Ekwah is yet to make a first-team appearance for West Ham, although he did score for them in a mid-season friendly win over Cambridge United last month.

Should Ekwah’s move be completed as expected, he would join former Hammers academy teammate Aji Alese, with the ex-Irons defender signing for the Black Cats in July.
