The latest on Crystal Palace's contract talks with Christian Benteke and James Tomkins

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has confirmed that talks are underway with Christian Benteke and James Tomkins about new contracts with the club.

The duo have both been at Palace since the summer of 2016, when they were signed during Alan Pardew's time in charge.

But with Benteke now entering the final year of his contract, and Tomkins having until the summer of 2021, Palace are now trying to tie down the pair to longer terms.

And Hodgson confirmed at his pre-match press conference ahead of the game with Manchester United this weekend that the contract negotiations are ongoing between the club and their representatives.

"I believe negotiations are taking place. James Tomkins comes into that category as well, certainly, but I can’t tell you how far advanced those negotiations are, because they are being handled by our chairman [Steve Parish] and our sporting director Doug Freedman.

"It is up to the club, when players are in the last year of their contracts, they find themselves in more difficult situations because players can leave free of charge, so these are matters for the club.

"If Christian signs a new contract I shall be happy for him and I shall be happy to continue working with him."

Benteke has scored 21 goals for Palace in 91 appearances since joining from Liverpool, but after scoring 17 times in his first season with the club, he has only netted four times in his past 50 games in the Premier League for the Eagles.

Meanwhile, Tomkins has played 87 times for Palace since joining from West Ham, with the 30-year-old netting seven times.

He has not, however, played at all yet this season, with the defender still recovering from a groin injury.
