The latest from the courts: A dangerous driver and a cannabis grower who went to prison

This week a court heard an uninsured driver drove at speeds of 140mph with his mum in the car.

BMW driver Alistair Smith, 24, had taken cocaine and was driving with his terrified 60-year-old mother in the passenger seat.

DerbyshireLive reports he reached speeds in excess of 80mph in built-up streets, as he tried to shake police from his tail through Borrowash, Risley, Sandiacre and Stapleford.

And at one stage he hit 140mph on the A52 near Derby.

Judge Shaun Smith QC, who sentenced him - told him: "“The fact of the matter is how anyone wasn’t badly injured or killed is a miracle.

“This is the worst case of dangerous driving without there being an accident that I think there could be.

“In my view it is towards the top end of the maximum sentence before I consider your personal circumstances and full credit for your guilty plea.”

Smith, of Braddon Avenue, Stapleford, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop and to driving without a valid licence or insurance.

He received a 12-month custodial sentence , and was banned driving for four years and six months.

Nottingham Crown Court heard Jeremy Coyle, of Ladybrook Lane, Mansfield, pursued a terrified youth around a petrol before running out,.

The incident was outlined by Lauren Butts, prosecuting, who said Coyle had also caused minor damage at his partner's home a day later.

And within another day, he threw stones at her bedroom window when she refused to open the door at 1.30am. Coyle broke down the front door and went into her bedroom.

"He assaulted her by striking her across the face with a flat palm a few times. He said 'if I can't have you, no-one can.'

"He then barricaded himself upstairs with a door he tore from its hinges. He said he broke into the house and assaulted his missus," said Miss Butts.

Coyle, 33, was sent to prison for 14 months and banned from contacting the woman for four years. He admitted threatening behaviour, criminal damage, affray and violence to secure entry.

He had been in court 55 times before and already had 129 crimes against his name.

Judge John Burgess told him: "You are a man with one of the worst records I have seen.

"Although I am not sentencing you because of your previous convictions, they are an obviously aggravating feature." The judge said Coyle had caused "mayhem."

And defendant Fabian Watts won praise for his honesty as a judge jailed him for growing cannabis for up to five years.

Recorder Gareth Evans QC told the 39-year-old: "You are a rare animal in these courts - a drug dealer who tells the truth.

"Normally they say they just started, it was just dumped on them or 'I didn't realise it was here.'

"I am giving you additional credit for your honesty.

"You made it worse for yourself in telling the truth," he added at Nottingham Crown Court.

He imposed a 21-month prison term on Watts, of Penllech Walk, Top Valley, who admitted the production of cannabis.

The recorder said the term had been shortened because he gave details to officers as to how long he had been committing the offence.
