Of Newport's 20 local ward areas, one area - Caerleon - has a rate of infection of more than 2,000 per 100,000, with 2,082 for the seven days up to December 27. That's equivalent to more than one in 50 people in the area having Covid right now.

Infection rates and cases in Newport local ward areas from December 21-27:
What does this data mean?
The data is based on the rolling seven-day average between December 21 and December 27, 2021.
It is really important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers such small areas. Where an area has a very small population even one positive case can push up the rate of cases per 100,000 significantly.
You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.
For example, Victoria & Somerton has more cases (156) than Lawrence Hill (97) for this period, but Lawrence Hill has a higher infection rate (1,673.9) than Victoria & Somerton (1,315.9). This is because Lawrence Hill has a larger population size than Victoria & Somerton.
What is the overall situation in Wales like?
The Welsh Government has introduced tighter restrictions in the wake of the highly-transmissible Omicron variant.
They include stricter measures for hospitality businesses and limits on indoor and outdoor gatherings.
The self-isolation period for people in Wales who have Covid has been cut from 10 days to seven.
First Minister Mark Drakeford has reiterated his warning that Wales is set to experience "challenging weeks" in January as the Omicron variant has become dominant in all parts of the country and is set to peak at the end of the month.
