The latest coronavirus infection rates as numbers continue to fall in every Greater Manchester borough

Coronavirus infection rates are continuing to fall in all ten of Greater Manchester's boroughs.

Rates fell by almost a quarter or more in every area, in comparison to the week before.

Rochdale still has the highest infection rates across our region, with 58 cases per 100,000 people.

However that represents a 25 per cent decrease on the previous week.

The lowest infection rates are in Bury, where there are 34 cases per 100,000 people.

All ten boroughs' infection rates are higher than the national average for England, which stands at 27.1 cases per 100,000.

The release of the latest figures from Public Health England came on the day when a major relaxation of lockdown rules came into force, with pubs and restaurants being allowed to serve outdoors and the re-opening of non-essential retail.

The latest figures cover the week ending Thursday, April 8.

A total of 1,290 people tested positive for the virus across Greater Manchester in that week.

In Oldham, which has the second highest infection rates, there were 135 positive tests.

The Prime Minister has urged everyone to 'behave responsibly' as the latest milestone is reached.

Boris Johnson said: "I’m sure it will be a huge relief for those business owners who have been closed for so long, and for everyone else it’s a chance to get back to doing some of the things we love and have missed.

"I urge everyone to continue to behave responsibly and remember ‘hands, face, space and fresh air’ to suppress Covid as we push on with our vaccination programme."
