The Late Shows shares virtual memories with fans as it appeals for funds for 2021 return

The coronavirus crisis might have meant the cancellation of some of our most popular events but that doesn't meant we can't celebrate them in other ways.

Ahead of what should have been the big night out for The Late Shows - the annual free after-hours culture crawl around Newcastle and Gateshead - its fans instead have been sharing their favourite moments on social media.

The long-running event, which sees attractions including galleries and museums, open their doors after-hours to visitors, had been due to get under way in the Ouseburn area of Newcastle on Friday evening and then follow-up this Saturday night with its main event in the city centre and across the river in Gateshead.

But with the 2020 outing cancelled - The Late Shows is hoping to make a return next May - its regular visitors have enjoyed remembering highlights from over the past 13 years.

Among the memories shared on the #lovelateshows hashtag on Twitter are photographs of a brass bland playing at Newcastle City Library; its iconic open-top bus which ferries people between venues; a drizzly scene of an outdoor event at Blackfriars in 2013 - where rain failed to dampen spirits - and a 2017 image of a silent disco posted by The Late Shows' organiser Bill Griffiths.

With a wide and changing range of venues taking part in the event, offering new experiences each year for visitors, the Twitter mentions ranged from Northern Print to Bessie Surtees House, while one fan, Keith Merrin, shared selfies spanning a five-year period, writing: "Definitely one of my cultural highlights of the year and looking forward to its return!

The Late Shows, which is coordinated by Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums, is fund-raising to help secure its comeback. Anybody able to help is asked to donate here before May 31. For more about the event see here.
