As the centennial year of Gallipoli comes to a close, playwright Steve Vizard and composer Paul Grabowsky debut a new musical that cuts to the heart of the Anzac legend. The social satire, directed by Roger Hodgman, is about staging the biggest live television event of the year, the Gallipoli Centennial Concert.
As the politicians try to score points and the media grab for ratings, Colonel Raymond Hope struggles to take charge of the singing and dancing fiasco. He’s close to surrender when he finds out the last remaining Gallipoli digger is alive. Perhaps he can lend an inch of dignity to the occasion?
Starring Peter Carroll and William McInnes along with Alison Whyte (Glitch), Esther Hannaford (King Kong), Toby Truslove (Utopia, The Speechmaker) and Nicki Wendt, the comedy inspires interesting questions about sacrifice and legend.
