The first episode of The Last of Us finally premiered on Monday, and fans are already praising it as the “greatest first episode ever made.” The show has been tipped as one of the biggest TV events of the year, and its debut did not disappoint.
Based on the critically acclaimed video game of the same name, The Last of Us follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened smuggler living in Boston twenty years after a mutated fungus decimated the human race. When tasked with escorting Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, across the post-apocalyptic United States, the unlikely duo come face to face with unimaginable horrors.
The nine-episode series is created, written and co-executive produced by Chernobyl showrunner Craig Mazin and the game’s writer and creative director Neil Druckmann. Along with the composer of the game’s score, Gustavo Santaolalla, the creative team have expertly translated the tone of the hit game into its TV adaptation.

The series has already received overwhelmingly positive reactions from critics and fans following its launch, with both fans of the game and newcomers to the franchise gripped by its intense debut. With just its first episode – and with eight still to go – The Last of Us has seemingly broken the dreaded ‘video game curse’ of acclaimed games failing to live up to expectations when adapted for TV or film.
Not only has it broken that curse, many fans are saying its 80-minute premiere is the “greatest first episode ever made.” Reacting to episode one on Twitter, @yoVincent888 said: “One episode in The Last of Us already the greatest show of all time.”
