The Last Of Us director is ‘intrigued’ by Elden Ring’s storytelling

Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us co-creator and co-president of Naughty Dog, is seemingly a fan of how games like Elden Ring tell stories through gameplay, environment designs, and item descriptions rather than cutscenes.

During an interview with The Washington Post, Druckmann touched on why he finds Elden Ring‘s story so compelling.

“I’m more recently intrigued by stuff like Elden Ring and Inside that doesn’t rely as much on traditional narrative to tell its story and is – I think there’s some – some of the best storytelling in The Last of Us, a lot of it is in the cinematics,” Druckmann said. “But a lot of it is in gameplay and moving around a space and understanding a history of a space by just looking at it and examining it.”

“And, to me, that’s some – that’s- right now is some of the best joy I get out of games that trust their audience to figure things out, that don’t hold their hand,” Druckmann continues. “That’s the stuff I’m really intrigued by going forward.”

Elden Ring was nominated for Best Narrative at the 2022 Game Awards. It didn’t win, but it did take home several others, like Best Art Direction and overall Game of the Year.

Recently, Druckmann also stated that Naughty Dog’s next game will be like a TV show in some respects. Though we likely won’t see it until closer to launch.
