The Last Kingdom season 5 release date and what to expect from the final series

The Last Kingdom is returning for its fifth and final season on Netflix next month.

The historical-fiction drama is based on the Saxon Stories by author Bernard Cornwell. It was originally a co-production between the British broadcaster BBC and Netflix however, Netflix completely took over from the third season.

Netflix have also announced this isn’t the final time we will see Uhtred as there is a The Last Kingdom movie on the way.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Last Kingdom season 5.

What is the Last Kingdom season 5 release date?

Netflix confirmed that The Last Kingdom season 5 will be on Netflix on March 9th, 2022.

Fans learned about season 5 last year and the crew and cast were spotted filming on a beach in the north east of England.

Later in the same year, Netflix announced there will be a movie to the series with Alexander Dreymon returning to reprise his role.

Titled Seven King Must Die, the film will be directed by Ed Bazalgette and filming for that is to take place in Hungary as well as the UK.

The producer of the show Nigel Marchant revealed that season 5 “concludes the series” but added: "There was always one more story that we wanted to tell.

What to expect from the final series

The first four seasons of the series were based on the first eight books – but author Cornwell has written a further five novels, leaving plenty of material for the upcoming fifth season and film.

The synopsis provided by Netflix for the fifth season reads:

“Years have passed since the events of the last season, and King Edward is still forging ahead with his ambitions to unite the Saxon Kingdoms to fulfil his late father’s dream. Although a long-standing peace between Danes and Saxons now exists, that harmony is under threat. Not only by a new Danish invasion but a Saxon rebellion. Uhtred has been entrusted with protecting Edward’s illegitimate son, the future King of England, Aethelstan. But the treacherous Lord Aethelhelm has ambitions for his grandson Aelfweard, Edward’s other son, to rule.

We follow Uhtred as he faces his greatest enemies, and suffers immeasurable loss, on his quest towards fulfilling his destiny. Meanwhile, Edward treads a fine line between peace-keeper and authoritarian as he battles to bring together the fractured Kingdoms of the land. In a surprising twist of fate, Uhtred discovers that the quest to unite England may well be linked to his own personal destiny."
