The Larkins: How is the ITV series different to H.E Bates’ novel The Darling Buds of May?

The Darling Buds of May is making a television comeback - but this time it will be named The Larkins.

The H.E Bates novel was originally turned into a television show of the same name 30 years ago, starring David Jason and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

And now ITV is once again adapting the novel into a six-part comedy series which will star Bradley Walsh and Joanna Scanlan as Pop and Ma Larkin.

The Larkins follows the story of a working-class family in the 1950s, led by wheeler-dealer Pop Larkin and his wife Ma.

Together with their six children they navigate village life.

Here’s what you need to know about the new ITV show.

How is the ITV series The Larkins different to the novel?

For starters, the H.E Bates novel is called The Darling Buds of May, while the new ITV series will be called The Larkins.

The remake will be written by Simon Nye, who said the television series would be “expanding the Larkins’ world a little”.

Nye hopes the remake will capture the escapism of the Larkin family for the modern generation, which suggests there could be some adaptations given the book was published in 1958.

So far the first look at the trailer seems to suggest the story will stay pretty true to the original remake of the book which became a hit in the 90s.

When is The Larkins on ITV?

The Larkins will hit ITV in October.

The first episode will premiere on Sunday, October 10th at 8pm.

What is The Larkins about?

The Larkins is set in the 1950s and follows the story of a working-class family with a small patch of paradise in the Kent countryside.

But Larkins are good-hearted people who are always happy to share what they have - but every week they seem to battle against snobbish villagers and the authorities.

The Larkins follows the love story between Mariette and village newcomer Cedric ‘Charley’ Charlton.

Charley arrives in the village as an unworldly and officious accountant from the city, there to investigate the Larkins’ tax affairs.

He is soon distracted by the beautiful Mariette, with whom he falls head over heels in love.

However, he quickly discovers that he has a romantic rival in the form of the handsome and mysterious Tom Fisher.

Mariette, on the other hand, may have plans of her own, which don’t involve men.

The comedy drama promises light-hearted warmth and escapism, but it has big shoes to follow as the 90s original series was such a huge hit.
