'The lads were in disbelief' - Michael Doyle on his Notts County wonder goal against Dagenham

Michael Doyle says his team-mates were in disbelief at his 50-yard wonder goal which banked Notts County a place in the third round of the FA Trophy.

The Irishman struck from the halfway line in stoppage time to seal a 2-1 win against Dagenham as the Magpies' skipper opened his account for the club in incredible fashion.

His goal ensured Notts avoided a replay against the Daggers on Tuesday after they had fought back to level from Kristian Dennis' opener through Mitch Brundle.

And reflecting on what was one of the best goals ever seen at Meadow Lane, the 38-year-old said the risk in taking a shot from such long range was worth it.

“I never score tap-ins," he said.

"They only seem to be from far out.

“The lads were in disbelief in the changing rooms.

“I saw the keeper out of his box and the minute the ball was coming to me I knew I was having a shot, even before the fans started shouting it.

“Sometimes they go into row Z and everyone asks what you’re doing so I was delighted that I caught it well.

“It’s a nice memento, especially as it was a winning goal. It’s just a bit disappointing that my kids weren’t here today.

“I’m used to watching my little girl score all the time and she tells me I never do, so I’ll show her that and we’ll have a laugh.”
