The Kirkby care home singing in the face of coronavirus

This is the moment that a sing-a-long in the sunshine at a Kirkby care home brought residents a moment of joy during the coronavirus lockdown.

Chelsea Seddon caught on video the elderly residents of Appleby Court care home in fine voice as they enjoyed some afternoon entertainment.

The video shows the home’s residents clapping and singing along to music from The Mavericks and Patsy Cline, with staff dancing away in the background.

Chelsea posted the video on her Facebook page together with her comment: "Walking past Appleby Court then and seen this happening!! How boss is this? The residents must be made up."

The response Chelsea received from friends and followers was overwhelmingly positive.

One woman, who had not been able to see her Nan since the lockdown was so moved by the video, she posted: "Thank u soo much crying looking at her miss her soo much xxxxx she looks great and thank u all for ur hard work and for giving them a great day full of smiles xxxx".

The ECHO spoke to the manager of the care home, Irene Mclaughlin.

She said: "We had a lovely party yesterday to cheer everybody up in all this doom and gloom.

"It lifted all their moods, and all the staff as well."

After a couple of people commented on the original post, expressing their concerns that the residents were not complying with social distancing, Irene added: "Obviously, we had to make sure they were self-distanced from the entertainers, they’re all in the same home so it was just moving them out of the lounge and into the garden.

"They’ve all been in together since the home’s been closed.

"They’ve all been stuck inside unable to see their families.

"I would like to say a big thanks to the night team for organising this, they came in on their own time, and the chaps that done the entertainment didn’t charge us at all."

She told the ECHO that the care home had received a lot of kindness from people since the lockdown began.

"We have had lots of nice things happen," she said: "We’ve had a local company delivering hampers to the residents, we’ve had a lady who made us little masks for the staff.

"A chap came in yesterday from an engineering place brought us visors that we can’t obtain otherwise, so there are some really kind people out there."
