'The king is dead' - Joey Barton's memorable interview after Newcastle United sacking

It was a decade ago today that former Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew secured his first victory in the hotseat at St James' Park.

The Magpies earned a 3-1 victory at home to Liverpool on December 11, 2010, with Andy Carroll securing the result with a long-range strike.

It was the perfect start for Pardew following a turbulent week. Disgruntled United fans gathered before kick-off and made their feelings clear on the decision to sack popular predecessor Chris Hughton.

The former Magpies coach had steadied the ship following the club's shock relegation in 2009, guiding the club to the Championship title and a comfortable 11th place in the top-flight before his dismissal.

A club statement insisted a candidate with "more managerial experience" was needed, and the Magpies hierarchy turned to former West Ham and Southampton boss Pardew.

It was a hostile reception for the new boss, and Joey Barton made it clear to the incoming manager on his first day in the job that the dressing room was not on his side.

However, the victory over Liverpool was the perfect response for Pardew, and it led to United's number seven publicly stating the club needed to move on from the departure of Hughton.

Barton told reporters post-match: "We were all disappointed to lose Chris.

"He was a great man and everyone has said how dignified he was and how much of a gentleman he was. He's one of the nice guys of football and it's a shame.

"It's a cruel game. The king is dead; long live the king."

Barton would go on to describe Pardew as one of the "better managers" he worked with in his career, and the new manager led United to a remarkable fifth-placed finish the following season.
