The Killers at Cardiff Castle review: The band's Glastonbury warm-up show goes down a storm with Welsh crowd

It was only a year ago that Las Vegas' finest came to Wales to play to a packed out Liberty Stadium .

Obviously fans of Wales, and our outdoor venues, The Killers chose to squeeze in a show at Cardiff Castle between UK festival appearances.

Gearing up to perform to the crowds at Glastonbury, the castle provided the perfect festival atmosphere, on a balmy evening in the Welsh capital.

The usual suspects, like Mr Brightside and The Man, saw the crowds burst into excited dancing, something which will no doubt be replicated when the head over to Glasto.

Before the main event, there was support from the self-described "queen of country soul" Yola, who offered plenty in the way of a warm up.

This was the first appearance in Cardiff for Brandon Flowers, Mark Stoermer and Ronnie Vannucci Jr in seven years but they definitely made a welcome return.

Brandon Flowers is the epitome of a glam rock indie front man and really knows how to get the crowd going. Combine that with Flowers' belting vocals and the band's fan-favourite hits, it's easy to see why The Killers are still going strong 15 years after they burst onto the scene with their debut album, Hot Fuss.

That record was a personal favourite of mine growing up, being one of the first I'd bought myself as a teenager so the pangs of nostalgia ran deep.

And the band aren't scared to pull from that album for their show.

Unlike many bands who love to play you all their new songs to plug a new album, the Las Vegas rockers understand their fans love their work, from Hot Fuss right through to Battle Born and Wonderful Wonderful, so they littered the show with songs from all eras of their musical tenure.

It was a perfect culmination of everything they've done to date.

What a show (Josh Knapman)

Kicking off with Jenny was a Friend of Mine, just as the Cardiff sun started to set, The Killers had the Welsh crowd bouncing from the off.

Cult favourite Mr Brightside followed, sending the crowd into raptures, before they moved into Spaceman and the atmosphere didn't drop for the whole night.

There were a few welcome touches too.

A sneaky "Oh, what's occurin'" from Flowers had the crowd in hysterics, while a touching tribute to BBC journalist Rachael Bland was a poignant moment. Rachael died earlier this year and her widower, Steve, had asked The Killers to dedicate a song to her when they played her home city of Cardiff.

The Las Vegas band also covered Welsh band The Alarm's song, Rain in the Summertime, and they shot red, white and green confetti into the crowds.

Overall, a well-executed performance and a lesson in showmanship from one of the best frontmen in the business.

If this was just a warm up for their Glastonbury set, festival-goers in Somerset are in for a treat.
