The key Liverpool failure Arsenal have exploited in Premier League title challenge with Man City

Arsenal are top of the Premier League table. There's a sentence Gunners supporters will never grow tired of reading.

The key now, for the Arsenal faithful, is that Mikel Arteta's charges stay there. And they will be there at Christmas if they pick up three points against Wolves on Saturday evening. With the Premier League breaking for the World Cup, one more win will see Arsenal top of the shop ahead of a month-long break in domestic football action.

That will mean Arsenal fans going into the tournament in buoyant mood, ready to cheer on England - or other countries - with a smile on their faces. It is a far cry from the disappointment of last season, when the Gunners missed out on Champions League football to fierce rivals Tottenham after two defeats in their last three games of the season.

Arteta has always called for supporters to "trust the process" and that process appears to be coming to fruition this season. So how have they done it?

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique believes there is one key reason - work in the transfer window. Speaking to LordPing, he believes the Reds have been left behind due to lack of investment.

But, with Fenway Sports Group rumoured to have put the club 'up for sale' things could be changing at Anfield. But it may be too late for this season.

Enrique said: "Liverpool have lacked a little bit of investment over the last few years. When Liverpool won the Champions League, they then needed to invest, but they didn't. When Liverpool won the Premier League, they needed to invest, they didn’t. When competing with a team like Manchester City it is essential because they don’t stop investing! It seems as if their investments depend on the outgoings. I think to be a consistently successful team, that can’t be the way to function.

"Manchester City are spending, Arsenal are spending, Chelsea and United are also spending. Manchester United have not been good for a long time, but they keep spending, they try to get the right players and at the end they will get it right because they try to buy good players and they try to get the right manager as well."
