The key Jermain Defoe Rangers attribute as Gary McAllister pays tribute to 'fantastic' veteran striker

He may not be able to run like he used to but Jermain Defoe 's intelligence will always make him a goal threat.

That's the view of Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister, who watched the 38-year-old hit the 300th club goal of his career with a deftly executed finish against Livingston.

The former England international has been used sparingly this season, and was left out of the Europa League squad, but McAllister will always back Defoe to come up with the goods.

Steven Gerrard's assistant said: "It's been a very positive week with three 2-0 wins in a row.

"Today I would like to touch on the fact that we saw another fantastic goal from a player who's had a fantastic career.

"He's probably coming toward the end of it but that sort of movement - it was a fantastic pass from James Tavernier - but that little movement toward the ball and spinning in behind, then to get the finish at the end of that, it's special.

"There aren't many players who can do that.

"He's a player I've always admired from afar, I don't think I ever played against him - I might be a wee bit too old! - but he's somebody I've always been a fan of.

"He's capable of little clever bits of movement and finishing, and today was another example of that.

"The fact he's playing at the age he is, that's credit to him.

"He's in fantastic shape, he's had a couple of injuries recently but like the other night we saw Kemar coming back into the team and producing and Jermain did that today.

"We've got four strikers, it's very competitive in that area of the pitch, so it's nice to see everybody getting a goal."

Rangers made five changes to the side that beat Standard Liege in the Europa League on Thursday but still extended their unbeaten start to the season.

A delighted McAllister noted: "That's one of the positive aspects of this week, the fact that we've rested Glen Kamara and Scotty Arfield and have another two players in each position.

"It's very competitive, Calvin Bassey is a perfect example of somebody grabbing a shirt when it becomes available and that's what we want to see going right throughout the entire squad.

"For us to continue this sort of run it won't be about 11 players, it will be about a squad of 18 or 19."
