The key Filip Helander strength Rangers benefit from as Sweden boss hails 'extremely reliable' defender after Spain shock

Heaps of praise were given to Rangers defender Filip Helander after the Swede helped end Spain's 66-game undefeated streak in World Cup qualifying.

Sweden manager Janne Andersson hailed the "extremely reliable" Ibrox star who stepped in to replace the suspended Marcus Daniellson in the crucial match with Luis Enrique’s men.

The 2-1 defeat was the first World Cup qualifier Spain had lost since 1993 as the in-form defender minimised the dangers of Alvaro Morata, Ferran Torres and Gerard Moreno.

That added to an already glowing week for Helander who scored the winning goal against Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday.

The Swedes now sit top of World Cup qualifying Group B after last night's victory.

On looking ahead to his side's trip to face Greece on Wednesday, Andersson paid special tribute to Helander.

He said: “Filip did very well in this match and he did very well when he played in March.

“Filip is a player who is extremely good at taking in an instruction and doing it very well based on it. He is extremely reliable.

“But Marcus did very well during the European Championships. So I have to see what it looks like when we get to Wednesday and Greece.”

Helander earned his 17th cap for his country against Spain as he partnered Manchester United’s Victor Lindelöf in the heart of defence.

And Lindelöf added: “We defended very well as a team.

“Filip was great, he shut down space, read the game and he was strong inside the penalty area.”
