The key Celtic strength that can prevent a new Rangers dynasty as Parkhead legend shares 'big difference'

Celtic legend Packie Bonner admits his old side in a similar situation to the late 80s - but insists their financial might can prevent a new Rangers dynasty.

The Ibrox club took nine league titles in a row between 1988-89 and 1996-97, matching the achievement of Jock Stein's Hoops side.

Celtic were looking to go one better this season but a miserable defence of their Premiership crown means Rangers can take the title this weekend.

That would be the earliest title win in a full-length season ever, and with a rebuild on the cards at Parkhead it's been suggested that Steven Gerrard's side could become the dominant force.

But while Bonner sees parallels to the Nine In A Row era he played in, he insists his old side won't be down for long.

He said on Go Radio: "I go back to when I was at the club in 1988-89.

"We won the double then Rangers had the big changeover with (Graeme) Souness coming in and so on.

"We still competed a little bit, we won the cup and so on, but there was a huge change in the club because we lost players.

"Billy McNeill had to bring in new players, the younger players stepping up hadn't had experience.

"So there was a huge change and that was really difficult to adapt, then we couldn't compete with Rangers because they had the money and were bringing in the big guys.

"We took a long time to recover from that situation - it almost took us nine seasons!

"I'm looking at Celtic now and they have to make decisions but the big difference this time around is that Celtic still have money.

"Celtic have the finances that they didn't have then. And things can change very quickly if you've got money."
