The Kenton chippy going the extra mile to feed the homeless this winter

A Newcastle chippy has launched a Christmas campaign to donate dozens of hot meals to those living on the city's streets.

Hundreds of homeless people face sleeping in freezing cold temperatures and could go days, if not weeks, without a hot dinner.

With that in mind, Mr C's Fish and Chip Shop owner Harj Chungh has given his customers the option of paying half price for fish and chips during December, donating the other half himself towards hot food for those less fortunate.

Harj, 28, said: "I wanted to give something back to the community who have helped us since we opened three years ago.

"When you're walking in the city centre you see so many people lining the streets. Most people want to help but some don't know the best way to do so."

Research by Loughborough University for the End Child Poverty campaign found that parts of the North East have the highest levels of child poverty in the country.

This includes Newcastle Central, where 13,270 children or 48% of the total are in poverty.

The Kenton eatery is raising the cash before going into Newcastle city centre with charity Destiny Streetworx to hand out their fish and chips to those most vulnerable.

Big-hearted Harj has been overwhelmed by the level of donations since launching the campaign and revealed they are likely to have to split the hot food delivery over multiple days.

He said: "Some people donating money to charity sometimes wonder what it will be spent on and if it will get to the intended recipient.

"Here, the donations go to the food which will be delivered directly to the homeless.

"We started this on Thursday and we've had a very good response so far. I'd like to thank the people of Newcastle so far who have donated.

"Everyone should have access to hot food and we are delighted to donate fish and chips to those who need it most.

"It's incredibly kind and it's great to know that there are people who care for people who are homeless."
