The Josh Windass valuation that proves Rangers were right to sell up as Championship clubs target star

Nottingham Forest, Bristol City and Cardiff are all interested in signing former Rangers attacker Josh Windass from Wigan, according to a report.

The Daily Mail has stated all three are looking to secure a £500,000 deal before the transfer window closes for the talented 26-year-old.

The fee represents a serious drop in value from the £2.5m paid by the Northern club to prise the player away from Ibrox just 18 months ago.

Gerrard stressed on his departure that he didn't see Windass as a starting central striker and that he wouldn't stand in the way of a move.

He said: "Wigan got to a number the board were happy with and they put the decision in the hands of me and Mark Allen.

“I spoke to Josh and asked what he wanted to do and he made it clear he wanted to speak to Wigan. I wouldn’t stand in anyone’s way if they want to play for another team in their favourite position.

“Josh wants to be a number nine every game for Rangers and I couldn’t guarantee that. I could guarantee him football matches but maybe in different positions and formations.

“Maybe Wigan boss Paul Cook said he could be number nine every week and that may have triggered his decision.

“Josh is a good boy and we got on well, but he wanted to speak and I don’t want to stand in his way if that’s what he wants.”

Windass has two years left on his current deal but may want to consider a move with his club struggling in the Championship relegation mire.

He has grabbed four goals in 16 appearances this season and may fancy his chances of producing a better level in a better functioning team.

His form since arriving in England has been patchy and despite 45 appearances last term he only amassed five goals and four assists.

Speculation has mounted about his future after being completely left out of the Wigan squad for their trip to Swansea City, in which the hosts ran out 2-1 winners last week.
