The Jose Mourinho factor that can help Tottenham navigate transfer challenges and Willian update

Here is your Tottenham morning digest for Wednesday, May 6.

Spurs to widen striker chase with cost effective options

Despite Jose Mourinho and Tottenham unlikely to spend big this summer, the need for a striker is still paramount.

With many teams having to cut their cloth due to the general and economic uncertainty in football currently, strengthening the Spurs squad will take some creativity.

Loans, free transfers and swap deals are all far more likely than a major splurge on a big name to come in and compete with Harry Kane.

The football shutdown and financial uncertainty going forward means teams like Tottenham won’t be able to refresh their squads with big purchases for the foreseeable future.

As a club, Spurs have often focused on primarily younger players to develop into stars but that is likely to be turned on its head with the team lacking experience in the dressing room.

So for Mourinho, identifying senior established players is likely to be the order of the day, something that has been his strength in the past.

However, Alasdair Gold believes the Portuguese manager will have to be smart in order to achieve this on a budget.

Mourinho tipped for reunion with former player

One player who could be on the Tottenham agenda is Chelsea midfielder Willian who is set to be out of contract this summer.

The Brazilian, 31, is set to end his seven year association with the West London club and was quoted last week as saying a move to a rival club would be ‘fine’.

Former Spurs number one Paul Robinson, speaking to Football Insider, believes Willian would be open to reuniting with his ex-boss at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

"A player that has a great relationship with Mourinho. If the player wants to stay in London and Tottenham was an option for him, you would imagine that would be his first choice."
