The Jonas Brothers’ Scott Kelly saga keeps getting funnier

For a generation of millennials, the Jonas Brothers have remained a unique constant in the entertainment world. Some of my favorite memories as a youth are intrinsically tied to their concert tours, the Camp Rock movies, and just simply talking about them on the Internet.

These days, the reasons to talk about the trio online have only grown and evolved… and now, they’ve gone into territory that has just become too funny to ignore. A TikTok from the Jonas Brothers’ concert in Buffalo, NY on November 9th has gone absurdly viral online this past week… but not for anything that has to do with the tour itself. Instead, it is a glimpse of a man attending the concert while scrolling through a resume on his phone. “Scott Kelly your resume was being reviewed at a Jonas Brothers concert tonight,” the video read. “Good luck.”

The video, which currently has over 52 million views and counting on TikTok alone, quickly became a fun topic of conversation. A number of official brand accounts, and even Nick Jonas himself, all proceeded to comment with positive references of Kelly, despite not knowing who he actually is.

On Thursday night’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the saga evolved even further. The Jonas Brothers, appearing on the show to promote their upcoming Disney+ holiday special A Very Jonas Christmas, were asked about Kelly. To their surprise (and the surprise of all of us), Fallon’s team were able to track down Kelly… and brought him onstage to essentially become the new subject of the interview.

Who is Scott Kelly?!

As Kelly explained, he didn’t actually apply to a new job, but knows the man who was scrolling, Brandon Bieron, from their time in the same infantry battalion in the U.S. Army. The two are apparently “going to link up” in the future, including having Bieron be a guest on Kelly’s national security podcast, At the Water’s Edge.

“[Bieron’s] been very successful in his post-military career,” Kelly revealed. “He’s the president of a company out there called Reimer — they do home services in the Buffalo area and he’s always looking to bring on veteran talent.”

As Fallon and the Jonas Brothers listened to Kelly tell his backstory, the funniest plot twist emerged… he had never heard of the Jonas Brothers before this week. While he lamented that it was because he “didn’t have Disney Channel growing up,” he does proudly admit to being “a huge fan now.”

I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that the whole Scott Kelly saga has been a tiny dose of joy across my busy week. It’s been quirky, but seemingly harmless, while also exemplifying so much of the weirdness of our modern moment. Men finding ways to distract themselves while tagging along with their daughters or significant others to “girly” concerts is a tale as old as time. Like I said, I’ve attended plenty of Jonas Brothers shows over the years, and witnessed a sea of dads do that firsthand.

I think the original video went so viral because of that, and also because of the specificity of someone’s resume getting reviewed while in the middle of said concert. Even though we now know that Kelly wasn’t actually applying to a job, too many of us are familiar with the roller coaster of emotions that can happen while you’re doing it. The idea of obsessively fine-tuning your resume and hoping that it is looked over with nuance and care, only for it to actually be read in the middle of “Year 3000”, is just too ironic to not sit with.
