The Joker's real name revealed: Fans think new movie is trolling Ben Affleck's Batman

A failed comedian will become the biggest villain in Gotham city - The Joker.

The new DC Comics film from director Todd Phillips will tackle how a failed stand-up comedian (Joaquin Phoenix) who spends his time caring for his ailing mother Penny ( Frances Conroy ) goes on to become a psychotic villain and the arch-nemesis of Batman .

The film will also give The Joker a civilian alter-ego before he becomes the baddie and his real name is Arthur Fleck .

Fans quickly pointed out how Afleck is A.Fleck...Affleck, leading many to believe they're trolling Batman or rather Ben Affleck who stepped down from the roll ahead of The Batman movie.

Naturally, many a meme will be born.

This isn't the first cinematic treatment to give The Joker a real name.

The Tim Burton film Batman (1989) gave the Jack Nicholson iteration of the character the name of Jack Napier.

Nicholson's Joker was a gangster and not a stand-up comedian, and was also revealed to have been responsible for the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents, Thomas and Martha.

Brett Cullen will portray Thomas Wayne in the new film, while Joker is seen making a smile with a child's face, who is thought to be a young Bruce.

Will he be responsible for their deaths here?

In the comics, The Joker does not have a confirmed civilian name or origin.

Additionally, petty crook Joe Chill is often credited with killing the Waynes.

We look forward to seeing what Phillips and Phoenix have in store.

Joker is released in UK cinemas on October 4, 2019.
