The Joelinton headline on Monday Night Football which might surprise Newcastle fans

Allan Saint-Maximin has deservedly been dominating the headlines for Newcastle United so far this season - but there is another attacker who has quietly shown signs of improvement.

Joelinton will likely never justify his record price tag in the eyes of Magpies supporters, with the former number nine failing to adjust to the burden of leading the attack.

Months after his arrival from Hoffenheim, Steve Bruce accepted the summer signing was best suited to a supporting role as opposed to being the focal point.

Joelinton has since delivered a number of steady performances as a support striker to Callum Wilson, or in a wide left role in a three-man attack.

A return of just 10 goals in close to 100 appearances to date will always be used to criticise the 25-year-old recruited at significant expense, but still yet to nail down a fixed role in black-and-white.

However, Joelinton's displays in the recent draws with Leeds United and Watford have earned praise from supporters, and there was even an unexpected mention for him on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

Analysing the 'Weekend Highs', the former number nine's name was listed alongside Manchester United stars Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood among others during the stats review of the latest Premier League matchweek.

Joelinton led the way for aerial duels won, coming out on top on 12 occasions during the 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road.

Popular stats account 'The Other 14' confirmed the Brazilian registered the most successes in the air for gameweek six, three more than Leeds defender Liam Cooper and former United striker Ivan Toney.

It is a marked improvement for Joelinton from his early days with the Magpies where the number nine would frequently appear to struggle with the physicality of the Premier League.

The stats from the latest outing would suggest in the switch to a 4-3-3 formation, the forward has become the outlet for Karl Darlow to target in the front line.
