The Joe Rogan UFC contradiction that catches everyone out as MMA makes thrilling return

After an eight-week hiatus the Ultimate Fighting Championship made its return with an event filled with drama, excitement and some questionable moments.

The fact Dana White's industry leader in mixed martial arts was the first major sporting outfit to come back in North America is no surprise given the bombastic president's approach to life and business.

His outspoken style isn't for everyone but he deserves credit for producing a show that appeared to take every necessary precaution it could during the coronavirus pandemic.

Of course, that's not counting holding the show in the first place.

Fans were banned from attending in Jacksonville, Florida, only four fighters were allowed in the arena at one time and equipment was sanitised after every bout.

It comes after stringent testing that produced a positive COVID-19 test for Jacare Souza and two of his entourage only 24 hours before fight night.

But when the show started UFC 249 certainly didn't disappoint in terms of action as Justin Gaethje produced a career-best performance to defeat Tony Ferguson and set up an interim lightweight title showdown with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

On the undercard, Vincente Luque's knockout of Niko Price was violent and decisive as Francis Ngannou demonstrated his superhuman strength with yet another first round finish.

But one key question remains unanswered - why was commentator Joe Rogan so keen to shake everyone's hand during the post-fight interviews?

Rogan couldn't help himself from first fight to last starting with Ryan Spann all the way to Gaethje in the main event.

His witty one-liner about introducing fighter's to an empty arena was well-timed but his insistence on contact with the combatants jarred.

The revered podcast host - arguably a bigger name than any fighter on the roster bar Conor McGregor - certainly, at times, distracted from the action from inside the cage.

Many who follow the sport may be nonplussed with Rogan's greeting but as the night developed it became something those for and against the return of the sport to base their arguments on social media.

The former Fear Factor star's handshakes were a major surprise to many within MMA media who were under the assumption that no post-fight interviews would take place inside the octagon.

And to add to the confusion, comedian Chris D'Elia claimed last month that Rogan was paying for tests before appearing on his podcast.

That doesn't chime with the show of defiance exhibited by the one of the leading figures in the company.

The UFC is a sport that has been battling for acceptance throughout its history with sceptics unable to appreciate the thrilling product on offer.

And whether you agree with its return or not, some of enterprise on display before, during and after the event should be praised with boxing also keeping tabs with the likes of Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury eyeing a return.

But a company star shaking the hands of combatants in the immediate aftermath of a fight where they have shed blood, sweat and tears during a global pandemic?

Someone should throw in the white towel for that.
