The Joe Aribo development which suggests Rangers star faces race to be fit for Celtic clash

Joe Aribo faces a race to be fit for the first Old Firm derby of the season.

The midfielder was already something of a doubt for the match after being ruled out for four to six weeks by Rangers boss Steven Gerrard earlier this season.

And news that he hasn't been included in the Nigeria squad for the upcoming international matches – both of which take place in the week before the derby – suggests he'll be cutting it fine if he is to return in time for the October 17 clash at Celtic Park. Nigeria play Ivory Coast on October 9 and Tunisia on October 13.

Aribo looked impressive in pre-season, and started the new campaign strongly for Rangers before picking up an ankle injury in the lead up to the Livingston match in August. Initially he was only expected to be out for a short while, however Gerrard confirmed towards earlier month that he'd suffered a setback and would miss up to six weeks.

The Rangers boss has been open about his need to strengthen in the midfield area. Ryan Jack is also currently struggling with injury.

Reports this morning suggested Gerrard wanted a new player in time for the weekend's match away to Motherwell, however Rangers are yet to confirm anything.

Preston North End star Daniel Johnson and South African international Bongani Zungu have both been linked with the club in recent weeks.
