The jobs top ten: week beginning 21/06/2010

Here on Guardian Careers we've been having a busy couple of weeks, launching new content left, right and centre. In case you missed them we now have series on top tips for trainee teachers, the graduate view and behind the job title. Inspired by the latter, this week's jobs top ten looks at the various research roles available at the moment. And if there are other careers out there that you want us to investigate, let us know in the comments.

10. Research fellowships in climate change, Institute for Development Studies. Up first because despite climate being such a growing area, it's tough to find jobs within it. And it's equally difficult to find research posts. Tada! This combines the two. Just call me your fairy godmother.

9. Research analyst, Foreign and Commonwealth office. One for the globe-trotters among you, this job is based in China. Unsurprisingly, you'll need at least basic Mandarin and on top of that, you'll be at an advantage if you've lived or worked in China. There can't be too many people who fit the bill so if you do, I think you'll have a good shot at getting it.

8. Director, Institute of Public Policy and Research. A higher level role than I usually feature but given the political climate at the moment, I think this job could be fascinating. The country is currently being run by two parties who on first glance appear to have little in common, so the policy initiatives they institute are going to be well worth watching.

7. Research analyst, TV advertising. Oooh, TV. Oooh, advertising. Yes, this is a desperate attempt on my behalf to make a research job sound sexy. But still, TV. It's about as cool as research gets really.

6. Project executive in market research. How many careers buzz words can you get in a job title? Although, I have to say I would have expected something with such a jazzy title to pay better. This job does, however, show the diverse set of skills a good researcher needs. Most important in this role is good customer relations, because it doesn't matter how good your research is if you can't explain it to others.

5. Marketing manager, Cancer Research UK. And talking of explaining research to others... It requires a certain type of brain to be able to understand the research that scientists come up with and then put it into layman's terms. If you can do that your skills are in high demand.

4. Research fellows, Imperial College. Yet more fellows but these ones will be researching technical innovation and entrepreneurship, which to me sounds like you could be discovering the future. If we're going to be travelling by spaceship at the end of the 21st century, you'll be the first to know about it. Now that is a fun job.

3. Part-time director of research, Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. As Guardian Careers' journalism experts keep pointing out to us, the face of the profession is changing dramatically. We're replacing hardened old hacks, with beat-bloggers. It's a fixed term post so might suit someone with kids, looking to work part-time until they're at school.

2. Research analysts, Guardian News and Media. Come and work with us! We're very friendly and make exceptional cups of tea. Find out what a research analyst actually does, here.

1. Senior research executive / research manager, The National Magazine Company. The National Magazine Company are the organisation responsible for mind-shaping publications such as Cosmopolitan, Esquire and Country Living. Sadly though, this role won't require you to research a combination of top ten sex tips for girls, top ten sartorial tips for boys and top ten shooting tips for country dwellers. Instead you'll be analysing consumer trends, putting together questionnaires to find out more about your readers and devising ways to promote and improve the brands, which is probably a lot more interesting.
