Jermaine Jenas believes that Chelsea can keep progressing in the Champions League, having reached the knockout stages of the competition.
The Blues sealed their place in the last 16 of Europe's top club competition, with goals from Tammy Abraham and Cesar Azpilicueta helping Frank Lampard's men to a 2-1 win against Lille last night (Tuesday) to finish second in their group behind Valencia.
And Jenas believes that Chelsea have already shown what they are capable of by getting out of what he described as a tough group that also featured last season's semi-finalists Ajax.
“I think when you looked at this group, it was almost one where you throw the teams in the air and see what comes out, because it was very evenly matched,” the former Tottenham midfielder said, speaking on BT Sport’s Champions League highlights show.
“And actually, I don’t think many people gave Chelsea much of a chance, given Frank Lampard was taking over with the transfer embargo situation.
“But the reality is he has got them up to speed so quickly, Frank, and the way he has got them playing attacking wise, is as exciting as ever.
“Defensively, I think he has still got frustrations, but for them to qualify through that group, it was a tough group.”
And Jenas believes Chelsea have what it takes to go further in the competition, adding that while the draw will be key for Frank Lampard's side, he insists that the Blues have the ability to progress to the latter stages.
“I think they are one of those teams that could grow in this competition. They are a big club, with huge amounts of talent at the club," he said.
“There are goals there, but defence is where they need to sort things out. There are some big clubs left in the competition, and Chelsea are one of those.
“Sort out that defence and you never know, confidence grows and who knows how far they can go?”
