Newcastle are one of four Premier League clubs looking at “transformative” Jarrod Bowen in January – and the presence of Steve Bruce could be a “plus point” in the pursuit.
That’s according to 5Live’s senior football reporter Ian Dennis, who noted Newcastle’s interest during a conversation on 5Live’s Football daily yesterday.
With the January window opening in four days, there is the potential for game-changing transfers which will impact on things at the bottom of the table. And United are one of four teams with survival on their mind who are looking at Bowen, who is valued in excess of £20million.
“When you look at the bottom of the table, how will the January transfer window affect things?” Dennis said.
“I was asked a fortnight ago how much Premier League interest is there in Jarrod Bowen of Hull City? I know for a fact there are at least four Premier League clubs who are really looking at the Hull player – Aston Villa, Brighton, Southampton and Newcastle. Whether Newcastle are in prime position with the Steve Bruce factor, I’m not sure. It might be a plus point for Newcastle in trying to get him.
“If Aston Villa were able to get a goalscorer, because Wesley has struggled, Jarrod Bown could make a real difference to that Aston Villa side to try and get out of the bottom three.
“How the managers look at it, they’re always conscious of going on a little bit of run where you suffer back-to-back defeats and teams below Crystal Palace find themselves in the mix.”
As reported in our Christmas edition of the Newcastle United notebook, there are fears Hull may raise their price on Bowen because of some ill-will still felt by the Tigers’ hierarchy about Bruce’s departure.
