The James McFadden admission that sums up how fans are feeling about Scotland

James McFadden knows not even a 10-0 win San Marino today will silence the critics.

Alex McLeish is under huge pressure after the Kazakhstan clobbering but Faddy insists he is still the man to lead the country out of the doldrums, despite calls for his head.

The Scotland No.3 said: “We know 1-0 is not going to be good enough. We need to show we’re better than that.

“For some people maybe 10-0 won’t be good enough though.

“It’s going to be tough because of how they sit in but we have to find a way to deal with it and break them down.

“We have watched footage of their game against Cyprus the other night. Cyprus won 5-0 so the pressure is there.

“It’s important the players are focused on the game.

“They don’t have to worry about the rubbish that comes with it.

“They have to make sure they are ready for it mentally and go and attack the game.”

Defeats like Thursday’s and October’s reverse in Israel have seen calls for McLeish to be replaced before the games are played a year from now.

McFadden launched a staunch defence of his former Motherwell boss and said: “I know what he’s like. He is strong and resilient, I think he is the right man.

“I said even before I knew there was any chance of my working with him that he was the right man for the job.

“There are always going to be detractors. There are people who didn’t want him in the first place, just waiting for nights like Thursday.

Manchester United star Scott McTominay apologises over Scotland fans snub

“I have been there on nights like that before as a player and he is skilled and equipped to deal with it. That’s it. You’ve just got to be there to support him.”

Faddy insists this campaign isn’t a busted flush just one game in.

He said: “It was the first game. We have time to turn it around and I would not be surprised if Kazakhstan took points off other team because they are no mugs.”
